Puerto Madero is key to understanding contemporary Buenos Aires. We explain
the current urbanization process within the context of the old port that allows
us to talk about both the requirements of a modern city in the late 1800s, and
the new urban patterns of the 21st Century. Docks, cranes, bridges, silos and
parks tell us the story from 1882 to the controversial recovery of the area as an
urban space and its recent interventions.
Located in La Boca, el Caminito (little path, in Spanish) is a street museum
comprising colorful painted houses typical of the immigrant dwellings that
came to characterize the port area towards the end of the 19th century. Today,
there are several works by Argentine artists incorporated as part of the street
museum and the Caminito has become a favorite with visitors to the city.
